Zakir Husain was born on 8th February 1897 in Hyderabad, and became the 3rd President of India on 13th May 1967. He was the first Muslim President in the country and provided his services till his death on 3rd May 1969.

He was prominent figure of the Indian freedom movement. He was awarded the highest civilian honour, ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1963.

Previous History

He was the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962, post which he became the second Vice President of India from 1962 till 1967. Prior to this, he was a co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia and served as its Vice Chancellor from 1928. During his tenure, Jamia was also associated with the Indian Freedom Movement. After his tenure as a Vice Chancellor, he was then nominated as a member of the Upper House of Indian Parliament in 1956. In 1963, Zakir Husain was awarded with the Bharat Ratna which was a moment of great pride and was India’s highest civilian honor.

Early Life

He was born in Hyderabad and grew up in Kaimganj, Uttar Pradesh, and was the second son amongst the 7 sons of the family. His father, Fida Husain Khan expired when he turned 10 years old and mother passed away when he was just 14 years old. His early education was from Islamia High School, Etawah, graduated from Muhammadan Anglo- Oriental College now known as Aligarh Muslim University. He completed his doctorate in economics from the University of Berlin in 1926. He got married at the age of 18 to Shah Jahan Begum and was blessed with two daughters Sayeeda Khan and Safia Rahman.

Presidential Tenure

Zakir Husian was the shortest term President of India and is the only one who died in the office itself. He was buried in the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi along with his wife. In the inaugural speech, he spoke about India as his home and the people residing in India as his entire family. Before his death, the hot debated topic was to nationalize the banks, the consent of which was received by the acting President, Mohammad Hidayatullah on 9 th August, 1969.

Zakir Husian served as a good Vice Chancellor, Governor, Vice President and President throughout his term.
