Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on 29 th January, 1954 and is an actress, producer, American media proprietor, host in a television talk show and also a philanthropist. She is popularly known for her talk show ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, which created history for the highest rated television show from 1986-2011.
Winfrey was named as ‘Orpah’, but when people started mispronouncing her name as ‘Oprah’, she gained her name and fame with the new name. She was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to an unmarried mother Vernita Lee who was a housemaid. Her biological father is Vernon Winfrey who worked in a coal mine who later changed his profession to a barber and then to a city councilman.
She started her schooling from Lincoln High School and then to Nicolet High School and East Nashville High School where she was voted as the most ‘Popular’ girl and won the second position in the nation’s dramatic interpretation. After winning the oratory contest, she gained scholarship at the Tennessee State University, where she completed her communication course. Here she won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty contest which made her first entry into the local black radio station, WVOL, where she was a part time news reader.
She was a victim of sexual abuse during her teenager, and planned to marry her boyfriend Stedman Graham in November 1992 after her six years of affair with him, but unfortunately the marriage never took place.
Publishing and writing
Winfrey has till now co-authored five books and the next book on ‘The Life You Want’ is scheduled to be published in 2017. Her book on weight loss published in 2005 had broken all records of world-wide highest advance booking fee. She published magazines from 2004-2008 named as ‘O, The Oprah Magazine’ and ‘O at Home’ were considered to gain more audience than her TV show.
Currently, Oprah lives on “The Promised Land”, Montecito, California which is a 42-acre estate with amazing ocean and mountain views. She also owns a property at Lavallette, New Jersey; an apartment in Chicago, an estate on Fisher Island, Florida, a ski house in Telluride, Colorado, and property on Maui, Hawaii and Antigua.
