Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the Capital territory of India. It has a population of about 11 million and a metropolitan population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India.

Delhi has been the political hub of India. Every political activity in the country traces its roots here. This was true even of the mythological era. The Pandavas of the Mahabharata had their capital at Indraprastha, which is believed to have been geographically located in today’s Delhi.

Delhi was made the capital of Independent India in 1950 and it was declared a state in 1992. Gurgaon, 8 kms from Indira Gandhi International Airport is the modern suburb of Delhi. Multinational investors have built swanky office blocks, malls, multiplexes, hotels and amusement parks in this fast developing region.

Delhi is a city dotted with ancient monuments, yet building infrastructure for the future.  The city offers one a glimpse of India’s religious diversity, yet retains the essence of each culture (the ancient Indian, the Mughal, the British) in its purest form.

The history speaks the importance and contribution of Delhi towards developing India as a country which has left its mark on the global map today. Delhi has the most effervescent history among other prominent cities in India.

Delhi can be said to be the true portrayer of Indian culture. It manages to seamlessly blend the traditional and the modern cultures.

The Delhi Metro rapid transit system built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is another means of transportation in Delhi. It serves many parts of Delhi and the neighbouring NCR cities like Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad.

Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, sacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and the modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.
